Have a 1099-NEC?
A 1099-NEC means someone paid you for work as an independent contractor, freelancer, or gig worker, not as an employee. This is treated as self-employment income, and it needs more paperwork than a regular W-2 job. Bringing everything below to your appointment helps us finish your return in one visit instead of sending you home for more documents.
Download and fill out this worksheet before your appointment. It walks you through totaling up your self-employment income and expenses by category, so you're not doing that math in the chair with us. Print it, fill it in by hand or on your computer, and bring it with you.

Please add up your expenses before you arrive. We're not able to go through a stack of individual receipts or invoices for you at your appointment. Add up your total spent in each category (for example, one total for supplies, one total for advertising) ahead of time. Bring your receipts along in case we need to double-check something, but come with the totals ready to go.
One Thing to Know
We can help with most self-employment income. But if your business had a loss, has employees, or tracks inventory, it may be outside what our VITA program can prepare. If you're not sure, call us before your appointment and we'll let you know.
Not sure if something counts as a business expense? Bring it anyway and ask us.
